ABDM Integration for Hospitals: What Your Software Needs to Support

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), run by the National Health Authority, is building a national digital health ecosystem in India. For hospitals and clinics, that translates into one practical question: can our software work with it? This guide explains the main building blocks in plain language and what to look for in an ABDM-ready system.

The ABDM building blocks, simply explained

  • ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account): a 14-digit health ID that patients can create free of cost, used to link their records across providers, with their consent.
  • Health Facility Registry (HFR): the national registry of hospitals, clinics and labs.
  • Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR): the registry of doctors and other practitioners.
  • Health information exchange and consent: records move between providers only after the patient approves.
  • Common standards such as HL7 FHIR so that systems can understand each other's data.

What integration usually involves

Integration is typically described in stages. Integrations are built and tested in the ABDM sandbox before a product is given production access. Facilities first enable creation and verification of ABHA numbers at registration. Next they act as a provider of health information, linking patient visits and sharing records with consent. Finally they can also request and view records from other providers, again with consent.

Your software must support these flows, store consent properly and keep an audit trail. The exact technical requirements and certification steps are published by the National Health Authority and change over time, so always confirm against their current documentation or ask your vendor to.

This article is an overview, not legal or compliance advice. Check the current ABDM and NHA documentation before you commit to a rollout.

What to ask your software vendor

  1. Which ABDM capabilities do you support today, and which are still in progress?
  2. Have you completed ABDM sandbox testing, and is the product live with real facilities?
  3. How is patient consent captured, stored and revoked?
  4. Do you use HL7 FHIR for health records?
  5. How are data security, access control and audit logging handled?
  6. Is there any extra cost for ABDM features or updates?

Why it matters beyond compliance

Facilities that can link a patient's records at registration spend less time on paperwork and make more informed decisions at the point of care. Patients who already carry an ABHA ID increasingly expect to use it. Treat ABDM readiness as a patient-experience feature, not only a regulatory box to tick.

Data protection law also applies. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 puts obligations on organisations that handle personal data, including patient data: clear notice, consent for stated purposes, security safeguards and breach reporting. Its rules are being phased in, so check the current commencement dates with your legal adviser. A well-built HMS needs role-based access, encryption and clear consent handling from day one. Planning an ABDM-ready system

If you are building or upgrading a hospital system, design for open standards and consent from the beginning rather than bolting them on later. Our team builds healthcare platforms with this in mind. See our healthcare solutions or talk to us about your project.

Frequently asked questions

What is ABDM?+

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is a national initiative led by the National Health Authority to create a digital health ecosystem in India, including health IDs (ABHA), facility and professional registries, and consent-based sharing of health records.

What is an ABHA number?+

ABHA is a patient's Ayushman Bharat Health Account ID, a free 14-digit number. It lets a patient link health records from different providers and share them with consent.

Is ABDM integration mandatory for hospitals?+

Requirements differ by facility type and by scheme, and they change over time. Check current guidance from the National Health Authority and the programmes you participate in.

Does ABDM integration affect patient privacy?+

Records are shared only with the patient's consent. Your software should still implement access control, encryption and audit logs, and comply with India's data protection law.
